‘Pollen potency’: the relationship between atmospheric pollen counts and allergen exposure

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract Pollen allergies are responsible for a considerable global public health burden, and understanding exposure is critical to addressing the impacts. Atmospheric pollen counts routinely used as predictor of risk; however, immune responses triggered by specific proteins known allergens, which occur both within on surface grain. The ratio between atmospheric allergen concentrations (‘pollen potency’) has been shown be inconsistent, with potentially important implications monitoring practice. Despite this, there no previous synthesis literature our factors that influence potency remains poor. We conducted scoping review aim deriving current of: (a) potency; (b) its variation through time, taxa location; (c) Our found highly variable seasons, locations; much this variability unexplained not deeply investigated. predictable patterns relating taxon, geography or inconclusive evidence regarding possible driving factors. With respect human health, studies in generally reported larger associations loads allergy symptoms than whole counts. This suggests influences base limited. Further research needed better understand health.

Differences in grass pollen allergen exposure across Australia.

OBJECTIVE Allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma are important chronic diseases posing serious public health issues in Australia with associated medical, economic, and societal burdens. Pollen are significant sources of clinically relevant outdoor aeroallergens, recognised as both a major trigger for, and cause of, allergic respiratory diseases. This study aimed to provide a national, and indeed...

Relationship between Pollen Counts and Weather Variables in East-Mediterranean Coast of Turkey

BACKGROUND Aeroallergen sampling provides information regarding the onset, duration and severity of the pollen season that clinicians use to guide allergen selection for skin testing and treatment. OBJECTIVES This atmospheric survey reports (1) airborne pollen contributions in Adana in one-year period (2) pollen onset, duration and peak level (3) the relationship between airborne pollen and s...

Airborne olive pollen counts are not representative of exposure to the major olive allergen Ole e 1.

Pollen is routinely monitored, but it is unknown whether pollen counts represent allergen exposure. We therefore simultaneously determined olive pollen and Ole e 1 in ambient air in Córdoba, Spain, and Évora, Portugal, using Hirst-type traps for pollen and high-volume cascade impactors for allergen. Pollen from different days released 12-fold different amounts of Ole e 1 per pollen (both locati...
